SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The University of New Mexico men’s golf season came to a close on Sunday after the Lobos tied for 26th at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships with a final score of 28-over 892.
Senior Andrej Bevins closed out his Lobo career with an even-par 72 on his final day, carding a tie for 50th overall. His Sunday was consistent, and included a closing birdie. Bevins recorded a top-10 statistical performance in par-4 scoring, carrying an average of 4.07.
Ben Tolsma closed out his NCAA debut with a 6-over 78, but he was unable to capture the same momentum from the previous two days. He finished this week at 9-over 225, as part of a five-way tie for 107th.
Andre Garcia started his day off nicely, recording consecutive birdies on his opening two holes. But, on the back nine, he lost his stride and coincidentally his momentum and ended up finishing the day at 5-over 77 and 12-over 228 overall as part of a five-way tie for 123rd.
Sean Carlon was unable to put together a birdie run that would’ve resulted in a better NCAA debut. His day began consistently but he found some roadblocks coming home and finished the day at 7-over 79 and as part of a crew of players in a tie for 127th at 13-over 229.
Gustavo Morantes put together his best performance of the week today, carding a 1-over 73 today, nicely recovering from Saturday’s score of 82. He climbed up 15 spots on the leaderboard and finish in sole possession of 137th place.
Vanderbilt pieced together the lowest team score on the day, their mark of 8-under 280 en route to jumping three spots up the leaderboard and being crowned champion of the stroke play portion of this year’s NCAA Championships.
Oklahoma, day-two leader UNLV and No. 1 USC all tied at 17-under 847 for 2nd. Eighth-ranked Illinois rounds out the top-5 at 14-under 850.
The top 15 teams from the opening three days of the championship will now advance to a fourth round on Monday with top eight teams advancing to match play before the national championship match on Wednesday, May 31.
