SUGAR GROVE, Ill. — After two days and 36 holes of action at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships in Sugar Grove, Illinois, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits at 16-over 592 and in sole possession of 26th place overall.
After a stormy opening round forced repeated delays on Friday, sunshine pervaded the second-round of the championships at Rich Harvest Farms. Temperatures in the 80’s and nearly non-existent winds made for prime scoring conditions throughout the day, allowing 17 teams to post sub-par rounds.
Andrej Bevins continues to lead the Lobo pack, as he translated consistent play into a 1-over 73 score on Saturday. His opening nine was shaky, yet he found his stride thanks to back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12, which got him to one-over where he finished the day.
Bevins is currently sitting at 1-over 145 overall as part of a logjam of players tied for 62nd.
Ben Tolsma continued to piece together one of his best performances on the year. After two days, he sits at 3-over 147 as part of a 13-way tie for 80th. He followed up Friday’s 74 with a 73 on Saturday, good enough to tie his second-lowest mark on the year. Tolsma was as low as 2-under Saturday, but gave back a few strokes on his homeward stretch.
In Sean Carlon’s NCAA Championship debut, he’s sitting as part of a 7-way tie for 108th at 6-over 150. Saturday he tallied a 1-over 73, and jumped up 26 spots on the leaderboard thanks to it, recovering nicely from Friday’s 5-over 77.
Andre Garcia has struggled to keep up the momentum that he was carrying into this week, but he’s once again putting together a performance that’s nothing to sneeze at. Currently he’s sitting as part of a conglomerate at 7-over 151 and is tied for 115th.
Morantes rounds out the Lobos’ pack, currently sitting in 152nd place overall at 14-over 158.
UNLV navigated the course well across the board as the Rebels moved into first place in the team standings at -14 with a one-stroke lead over second-place Oklahoma following their second-round 279 (-9).
Illinois rounds out the tournament top-3 at 11-under 565, and is followed closely by the tandem of Auburn and Vanderbilt who both sit at 10-under 566.
Scottie Scheffler holds the lead after day 2, thanks to consecutive 4-under 68’s. He’s one shot clear of a collection of top-100 players at 7-under.
The third-round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship will tee off at 6:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
