TUCSON, Ariz. — The 2017 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship at the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona is in the books. The Lobos recorded Sunday’s best score of 13-under par 275 to conclude the championship in fifth place at 14-under par 850 (288-287-275).
UNM was led by the strong performance of Andre Garcia, who recorded a 5-under 67 Sunday en route to his third-place finish at 7-under 209. Garcia recorded the lowest par-5 scoring average in the field (4.33) and the fourth-lowest par-4 (3.97) and par-3 (3.17) scoring averages in the field.
Two Lobos – in Andrej Bevins and Gustavo Morantes – finished tied for 11th at 4-under 212.
Bevins tallied a mark of 1-under 71 today, and pieced together field-leading scoring performances on this week’s par 3’s, where he carried an average of 2.75. He also showcased his power on the par 5’s, where he carried the second-lowest scoring average in the field (4.42).
Morantes showed the most improvement after the first day. Over the weekend, he moved up 37 spots on the leaderboard, which allowed him to finish as part of the trio tied at 11th overall. Morantes was bogey-free through 17 holes, yet recorded the first bogey of the day on the 470 yard par-4 to finish at 5 under for the day.
Morantes recorded top 3 scoring averages on the week’s par 3’s (3.00) and par 4’s (3.90).
Sean Carlon closed out his sophomore MW campaign with a tie for 32nd place at 3-over 219. He recorded his lowest round of the week Sunday, a 2-under mark of 70.
Rounding out the list of Lobo competitors is Benjamin Tolsma, who finished alone in 51st at 13-over 229 in his MW debut.
This year’s MW men’s golf champions are the Rebels of UNLV, which became the first program to win back-to-back titles since New Mexico won in 2013 and 2014. UNLV now has four conference crowns, the second-most in league history, two behind UNM’s six.
Brian Humphreys of Boise State claimed individual medalist honors, becoming the first freshman in Mountain West and program history to win the title. Humphreys concluded the tournament with the second-best 54-hole total in MW Championship history at 12-under par 204. He was the lone player in the 55-man field to shoot in the 60s all three rounds.
