Las Vegas, Nev. — After two days of action the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is sitting in sole possession of 11th place at 16-over 592 (296-296) for the Southern Highlands Intercollegiate.
The Lobos day really started gaining momentum after the turn onto the second nine, however some mistakes hampered the day’s final tally.
“Another day with three solid scores. Still in a good position to move up with a good final round.” said UNM head coach Glen Millican.
Samuel Kim (71-74-145) continued to set the pace for UNM, on the day he carded a 2-over 74 and saw his day finish with him tied for 21st.
Andrej Bevins (77-71-148) made up serious ground on the day, he shaved six strokes off yesterday’s total and leapt 32 spots up the leaderboard. By day’s end, he sat tied for 32nd with four other players. His day started off quickly, birdying his first hole, and finished even stronger, going 2-under over his last three.
Following close behind is Andre Garcia (77-72-149), who also made strides shaving strokes. His even-par mark today included five total birdies, two of which came in the first three holes of his homeward nine. After the effort today, Garcia ended the day in a six-way tie for 36th at 5-over.
Gustavo Morantes (73-79-151) struggled throughout the day and finished 8-over and tied for 53rd.
Sean Carlon (75-79-154) stumbled out of the gates but found his stride and consistency coming home, recording six consecutive pars to close out his day. Currently Carlon is sitting tied for 63rd.
UNM continues to put on a strong performance in the par-5 scoring department, the team currently carries the third-lowest cumulative scoring average (4.88). That effort is being spearheaded by the campaign of Kim, who has played the tournament’s par-5’s in 5-under fashion so far this week.
As for the rest of the field, seventh-ranked USC continues to lead the pack. The Trojans currently hold a six-stroke lead over tenth-ranked Stanford and the fourth-ranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State.
Individually, Collin Morikawa, the ninth-ranked collegiate golfer in the nation, continues to set the pace. He followed up yesterday’s six-under mark with a one-under 71 effort today. Trailing only a stroke behind is Justin Suh of USC at six-under overall.
The final round is set for tomorrow and live scoring will once be available through GolfStat here.
