Palomino Wins Second MW Swimmer of the Week Honor

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico junior Adriana Palomino was chosen as the Mountain West Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts at the Phill Hansel Invitational the previous weekend. The award is the second weekly honor she has received this season.

Palomino swam in five events in Houston, including the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle, the 1650-yard freestyle, the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. She made NCAA B-Cut in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and the 1650-yard freestyle.

Palomino also broke or tied two school records at the event, winning both of those events. Her final time of 4:42.77 in the 500-yard freestyle was a school record and ranked as the Mountain West’s top time for the event this season. It also ranked as the 25th best 500-yard freestyle time in the nation. Palomino then tied her previous school record in the 1650-yard freestyle with her seed time (16:22.46). Her final time of 16:23.75 was also the top Mountain West time in the 1650-yard freestyle for the season, good for 23rd nationally.

The Arizona native captured two more top-three finishes on the weekend. She finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.85, good for the conference’s second-best time and the nation’s 67th-best time of the season. She also finished third in the 800-yard freestyle relay along with junior Emily Huffer and freshmen Klara Farkas and Matea Sumajstorcic. The group finished with a final time of 7:22.39, the second-best time in the conference, 32nd in the nation.

Palomino also teamed up with senior Madison Burns and juniors Konoha Shinada and Carol de Groote Tavares for a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Their time of 3:24.23 was the conference’s third-best time this year and nation’s 50th-best time.

Palomino and the rest of the team will be back in action on Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. MT when they host the Cherry v. Silver Invite.
