Konoha Shinada Breaks School's 100 Butterfly Record in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas / FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming team swam in seven events on Friday for the second day of the Phill Hansel Invitational in Houston. The team is currently tied for seventh place out of 10 teams along with Colorado State and Northern Colorado going into the final day of the event, scoring 351 points.

Junior Konoha Shinada was the highlight for the Lobos on the day, dominating the 100-yard butterfly. Shinada qualified first in preliminaries, setting a new school record with a time of 53.45. She then matched that time in the A-Finals to win the event. Freshman Klara Farkas also finished in the top-20 of the event, qualifying 20th with a time of 56.85. She went on to finish fourth in the C-Finals, placing 20th overall with a time of 57.14.

Junior Adriana Palomino also had a strong performance in the 200-yard freestyle, placing third overall. Palomino qualified fifth overall with a 1:49.24 to make it into the A-Finals. She finished with a final time of 1:47.85.

UNM had two quality finishes in relays, including a third place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Palomino, Farkas, freshman Matea Sumajstorcic and junior Emily Huffer combined for a final time of 7:22.39 in the event.

The Lobos were led by senior Madison Burns, juniors Carol de Groote Tavares and Shinada and sophomore Asami Terada in the 200-yard medley relay. The group finished fourth with a final time of 1:42.16.

Sumajstorcic captured a top-10 finish in the 400-yard individual medley. Sumajstorcic qualified 10th in the event with a time of 4:23.13, placing her in the B-Final. She finished second in the final, 10th overall in the event, with a final time of 4:20.65.

Terada also gathered an individual top-10, with hers coming in the 100-yard breaststroke. Terada qualified for the B-Finals with a time of 1:04.19, 13th overall. She then improved on that time, finishing second in the final for 10th overall with a 1:03.08.

Shinada was the Lobos’ top finisher in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing 16th overall. She qualified for the B-Finals with a 10th place qualifying effort, posting a time of 55.82. Shinada then finished eighth in her final with a time of 57.15.

The women’s diving team only competed in one event on Friday at the NAU Diving Invitational in Flagstaff, as the women competed in the one-meter dive.

32 women dove in the event, five of which competed for UNM. Sophomore Natasha Dark was the Lobo’s top performer, narrowly missing the cutoff to advance to the finals as she finished 13th with a score of 253.60. The top-12 from the event advanced to the final. 

The Lobo’s next highest finisher was junior Allyson Concepcion, finishing 18th with a score of 238.00. Freshman Hannah Tiendas, sophomore Valencia McDonald and junior Madeline Horner also competed in the event for UNM. Tiendas finished in 23rd with a 212.55, McDonald finished in 25th with a score of 200.85 and Horner finished 26th with a score of 198.75.

Both the swimming and diving team will be back in action again tomorrow, as the swimmers will compete in the final day of the Phill Hansel Invitational and the diving team will compete in the second of three days at the NAU Diving Invitational. To follow the Phill Hansel Invitational live, download the Meet Mobile App here
