ALBUQUERQUE, N.M –
The University of New Mexico men’s golf team logged its second top-5 finish in as many outings at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The Lobos finished at 18-over 882 (282-301-299) this weekend, in a two-way tie for fifth with Colorado.

The UNM effort was led by sophomore Sean Carlon who posted a team-low 72 Saturday. The even-par mark helped propel Carlon into a tie for eighth thanks to a birdie on the closing hole. This marks Carlon’s highest career collegiate finish, besting his 13th-place finish at last season’s weather-shorted Lone Star Invitational.

“I think we’re an extremely talented team, it’s just a matter of time before we start putting it all together all the time,” said Carlon.

Another Lobo joined Carlon inside the tournament’s top-20. Andre Garcia, the leader after round one, struggled but was able to close with two stretches of four consecutive pars. At day’s end Garcia finished tied for 19th with a 5-over 221 (66-77-78).

Two more Lobos finished inside the top-50 in Andrej Bevins (72-78-75) and Samuel Kim (77-73-76). Bevins finished in an eight-way tie for 34th with a 9-over 225 and was able to tally two birdies in his final five holes. Whereas Kim ended the day in a six-way tie for 42nd with a 10-over 226, closing with two birdies in his final three holes.

Gustavo Morantes rounds out UNM’s list of competitors, finishing at 13-over and tied for 58th. For the tournament, Morantes finished with the third lowest par-5 scoring average at 4.58.

“Overall a decent finish for us. We did a good job of finishing today after a really bad start,” UNM head coach Glen Millican said.

Benjamin Tolsma, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 34th at 9-over (76-76-73). Tolsma was able to close out his round with seven consecutive pars.

Sam Dickey (72-77-80-229) tied for 58th, Isaac Alderete (79-73-79-231) tied for 68th and Mark MacGrath (83-75-78-236) tied for 79th to round out the list of Lobo individuals.

New Mexico stood out statistically with par-5 scoring, carrying a team average of 4.58 and playing the holes in 25-under fashion. The Lobos also tallied the second most pars in the field with 168, trailing only Colorado with 169.

“Our guys are doing a lot of things really well right now. Moving in the right direction and looking forward to the trip to Colorado in a couple weeks,” said Millican.
