ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University of New Mexico men’s golf team was able to claw it’s way into T6 position at 29-over 605 (294-311). The movement came on a day featuring steady winds in excess of 25 miles per hour with gusts approaching 50 mph, and a scoring average of 79.91.
Head Coach Glen Millican was honest in his assumption of the day, and hopeful for tomorrow’s result saying,
“Today was really difficult. Our guys hung in there after a really tough start and did enough to stay in position with one round to go. A good round tomorrow will give us a chance for a solid finish.” said Millican.
Andrej Bevins managed to stay within the Top-10 after the today’s 5-over 77. After two rounds Bevins sits T9 at 5-over 149 (72-77). Bevins has managed to play this weeks par-5’s in 5-under fashion, good for second in the field and currently carries an average of 4.38 on the holes.
Gustavo Morantes’ day two total was identical to that of Monday’s round, a 4-over 76 helped to stable the ship and move Morantes inside the Top-20. His mark of 8-over 152 puts him in a tie for 20th position. Morantes lurks closely behind Bevins on par-5 scoring, thus far playing the holes with a scoring average of 4.50 through Tuesday’s round.
Samuel Kim quickly found trouble out of the gate, but was able to close his round on a high note with a birdie on the 606 yard par-5 9th. Kim still finds himself second in the field in par-3 scoring average. His consistent play has allowed him to play the holes in 1-over fashion for the tournament, translating to a 3.13 average, along with tallying seven total birdies, good for third most in the field.
Freshman Sean Carlon struggled with the conditions in today’s round, which included a lone birdie on his way to a 12-over performance. Carlon is however, ust outside the top-20 in total pars for the week with 20.
Andre Garcia was the only Lobo to improve on their opening round score, tallying a 5-over 77 to follow up Monday’s opening round of 82. Garcia also shares second place honors in par-3 scoring average with fellow Lobo Samuel Kim at 3.13.
Remember that the top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. As it currently stands, the Lobos are currently two shots off fifth place, three shots off of fourth and five shots shy of third place USF.
The tournament pace continues to be set by Arizona State at 6-over 582 after today’s 8-over 296, 15 shots clear of the closest team. Two Sundevils are inside the Top-5 in Jon Rahm (-4) and Jared duToit ( 1). TCU jumped three spots thanks to an afternoon rally and holds second place alone at 21-over (292-305) 597.
South Florida yielded one spot in the difficult conditions, falling to third place overall at 24-over 600 (289-311). USC sits two shots behind the Bulls at 26-over 602 (291-311), with the Aggies of Texas A&M on Trojan heels at 27-over 603 (296-307).
Jon Rahm, the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, built on his Day 1 lead and is four shots clear of TCU’s Ryan Books. Rahn’s 4-under tally of 140 gives him the lead, and another distinction; he is the only player under par.
Books and USC’s Sean Crocker share second at even-par 144. While another Sundevil sits in fourth at 1-over 145 in Jared duToit. While fifth place his held in a four way tie by Rigel Fernandes (USF), Ryann Ree (SDSU), Hannes Ronneblad (Texas Tech), and Gunn Yang (SDSU) AT 4-over 148.
The Lobos Wednesday tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. MT off of the 10th tee.
