Head Coach Glen Millican saw the day as an all-around good performance for such a young squad saying the following,

“We played well but didn’t do enough to win, UNLV just played great. But I’m happy with our effort. We made a run at the end and still had a chance with a few holes to go, still a very good week for us” said Millican.

Statistically speaking UNM was the most well rounded team with respect to scoring average. The team lead the field in par-5 scoring, playing the holes in 26-under fashion and carrying a scoring average of 4.57. In addition, UNM also finished in second place in both par-3 (3.12) and par-4 (4.07) scoring. The Lobos logged 54 birdies on the week and 173 pars, both good for fourth most in the field.

The 2016 Mountain West Golfing Champions are the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels who were able to outlast a strong showing by UNM and tally a 9-under par 279 on the final day. UNLV was lead by Zane Thomas’ T3 performance, and helped further by all five players finishing within the top-25. Fresno State finished in third place at 5-under 859 followed by defending champion San Diego State tying Colorado State at 4-under 860.

This year’s medalist was Fresno State’s Trevor Clayton at 9-under 207. Clayton posted a closing round 69 in order to move two strokes clear of 54 hole leader Corey Eddings of Nevada.

Up next for the Lobos in the NCAA Regional Championships beginning May 16. UNM is automatically qualified to play at home on the University of New Mexico Championship course and hopefully qualify for the Championships in Eugene Ore.
