Ardmore, OK – Day two of The Maxwell Invitational has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The final results for the tournament will be tallied based off of the results after the first 36 holes of competition.

The University of New Mexico men’s golf team has tallied yet another top-5 finish on the year, and on the heels of some noteworthy individual performances, now has some momentum heading into the MW Championships.

UNM head coach Glen Millican was in high spirits despite his team’s momentum being tamed due to the stormy conditions.

“It is unfortunate that the weather didn’t allow 54 holes but there not a whole lot anyone can do about that. Our team had a very good finish this week and our last six holes yesterday turned out to be really important moving us into a tie for 3rd from being in 6th. Second straight Top 10 for Garcia and second Top 10 for Sam were also strong individual performances.”

Samuel Kim (66-72) and Andre Garcia (71-67) tallied top-10 finishes, with both finishing T7 at 2-under 138. This is Garcia’s second consecutive top-10 performance on the season, while Kim also notched his second top-10 finish on the year.

Gustavo Morantes finished at 1-under 139 (72-67) and in T12 position. Morantes’ late afternoon rally – in which he played his final three holes in 3-under fashion – helped to propel the Lobos from 6th to T3.

Freshman Sean Carlon was able to nab another top-20 finish in his young collegiate career, coming in at even-par 140 (70-70) here at The Maxwell.

Andrej Bevins somewhat struggled with the stormy conditions on Day 1 and finishes the tournament at 5-over 145 (71-74) and T45.

UNM had two individual competitors this week in Benjamin Tolsma and Joseph Abella. This tournament marked Abella’s return to competitive collegiate golf after being forced to sit out the spring season due to a back injury.

Abella jumped 28 spots through the afternoon 18 to finish in T28 at 3-over 143 (75-68). Tolsma battled the conditions throughout the day and eventually finished T67 at 14-over 154 (77-77).

The tournament crown belongs to the University of Texas, with a final tally of 13-under 547 (277-270). Baylor cleared UNM by two strokes and finishes 2nd with a cumulative team score of 8-under 552 (276-276).

The Lobos (278-276) finished T3 with co-host Oklahoma State (277-277) at 6-under 554. Memphis rounds out the top-5 at 3-under 557.

This year’s individual medalist honors was earned by Gavin Hall of Texas, whose 6-under 134 was two shots clear of the University of Memphis’ Lars van Meijel and Baylor’s Hunter Shattuck.

UNM lead the field in par-3 scoring, and was second in par-4 scoring at 7-under (3.94), behind only Oklahoma State’s mark of 8-under (3.93). The Lobos also tallied the second most eagles, notched 27 birdies, and had the most pars of any squad with 126.

Andre Garcia had the second lowest par-4 scoring average in the field, playing the holes in 4-under fashion and earning the average of 3.83. Both Gustavo Morantes and Joseph Abella tied for the lowest par-5 scoring averages in the field at 4.50 (4-under).

Millican’s closing remarks showed that he was proud of his team’s performance, and the experience that came along with it,

“The Maxwell was a great experience and our team really enjoyed the trip. It was also a nice opportunity for Ben and Joe to play as individuals. This was more valuable experience for Ben and great for Joe to get back into playing after such a long time out with his back injury” said Millican.
