TUCSON, Ariz. – The 48th ranked University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits in sixth after today’s action in the National Invitational Tournament. The Lobos posted a team score of 1-under 287.
The Lobos were lead once again by Gustavo Morantes. Morantes posted a 5-under 67 today. His round included seven birdies and an eagle on the par-5 8th. After day one Morantes sits tied for second with Nevada’s Nick Fuller.
Andrej Bevins posted an even-par 72, and after struggling on the front nine Bevins was able to reclaim some ground during a stretch of four holes that included three birdies. At days end Bevins was in 29th position.
Both Samuel Kim and Sean Carlon posted respectable 2-over 74’s. While Andre Garcia followed close behind with a 3-over 75.
Head coach Glen Millican saw the day as positive, yet one that still had room for improvement.
“Great day by Gustavo. Aside from him we left some shots out there and need to play the par 5s better tomorrow” said Millican.
Despite some missed opportunities UNM was able to play the par-5’s in 5-under fashion as a team today, and was the second lowest scoring team on par-4’s.
The University of Santa Clara at 10-under 278 is currently tied at the top of the leaderboard with Nevada. The Bronco’s were singlehandedly lead by Hayden Shieh who posted a bogey free 10-under 62.
Shieh got out to a fast start playing his first 10 holes in 7-under, Santa Clara was also helped along by three other players in Tyler Kertson, Michiel Eyre and Charlie Watson all posting even-par 72’s today.
“We’re still in a position to compete. Our guys are very capable of playing a great round of golf tomorrow and that is our focus right now.”
