Lobos Drop Second Straight, 4-2 to Nevada

by Frank Mercogliano

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Nevada took four singles matches, including the final one in a tiebreaker to edge New Mexico 4-2 and second UNM to a second straight defeat in San Jose.  The Lobos dropped to 10-7 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain West, while Nevada moved to 8-8 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain West.

The Lobos only got one win in singles as Katherine Jhang won in a comeback 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.  UNM has a lead at No. 5 singles as Hsuan Huang was up 2-1 in the third set, but UNM couldn’t force the finish.  Maud Vandeputte, who had three straight no-decisions, couldn’t pull out a tiebreaker, losing 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), and that is what clinched it for Nevada.

UNM’s only other point was in doubles, where the teams of Leonie Hoppe and Jhang won at No. 1 and Maria Sodre and Sarah O’Connor won at No. 3.

The Lobos have two matches left in the regular season, both in Ft. Collins, taking on a pair of ranked teams in Colorado State and Wyoming.
