Streak Ends 4-2 at SJSU

by Frank Mercogliano

San Jose, Calif. — In a rare switch, New Mexico lost the doubles point, and that proved costly as the San Jose State took three singles wins to edge UNM 4-2 in San Jose on Friday.

The Lobos were swept in doubles 2-0, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead, and they took three singles matches to seasl the deal.  The Lobos got wins from Katherine Jhang (6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles) and Hsuan Huang (6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles), but that was it.  Had UNM pulled off a point in doubles, the match would have hinged on Maud Vandeputte at No. 4 singles, who was in a wild match, splitting her first two sets winning the second set in a tiebreaker 7-5 after losing the first set in a tiebreaker 7-4.

In marked Vandeputte’s third straight unfinished match.

The Lobos face Nevada tomorrow at 11 am in San Jose.
