Lobos Set Season Highs in Hits and Runs in Win at Utah State

by Allison Weiss

LOGAN, Utah— The Lobos rallied to complete two comebacks on Sunday, using an eight-run third inning and scoring six unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings to win 15-13 over Utah State.

Not only were the 15 runs a season high, the Lobos did it on a season-high 18 hits with six different Lobos recording multiple hits. Emma Bramson led the way with a perfect 4-4 outing at the plate, followed by three hits for Peyton Robinson and two hits apiece from Ashley Archuleta, Rachael Hathoot, Lauren Garcia and Maddie Boldt.

Boldt led with four RBI in the game on a grand slam as part of the third inning scoring, with Robinson adding three RBI and Hathoot with two. Eight different Lobos contributed at least one RBI.

A shakeup of the lineup produced a run in the first inning for New Mexico, with Archuleta moving up into the two spot and earning her way on base with a walk. Garcia brought her around on a double that fell just out of the reach of the center fielder to open the scoring.

Utah State answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, benefiting from the leadoff batter reaching on a throwing error.

The Aggies added six runs in the bottom of the second, but the Lobos had an answer of their own in the top of the third with eight runs on eight hits.

Bramson led off with a double, the first of two for her in the inning, with Robinson laying down a bunt and Bramson scoring on a throwing error by the Aggie first baseman on the play. After Archuleta reached on a fielder’s choice, Hathoot hit a double to right to move the Lobo around to third and following a walk for Garcia that loaded the bases, Keyannah Chavez was hit by a pitch to score another run.

Boldt put UNM right back in the game with one swing, hitting her fifth home run of the season to clear the bases and pull the Lobos within one at 8-7. After an Aggie pitching change, Chloe Yeatts kept the rally going with a single to right and Bramson hit a double to left to put two more runners in scoring position. With the lineup turned over, Robinson gave the Lobos their first lead since 1-0 with a single to left center that scored both runners for the final runs of the inning.

Much like the first inning, Utah State responded with five runs on seven hits to go back in front 13-9 in the bottom of the third. They were the final runs that the Aggies would score as the Lobos pitched four scoreless innings while the Lobos continued to string together hits and runs in the fifth and sixth.

UNM needed just two at-bats to score a run in the fifth as Bramson reached on a single to right and moved to second on a wild pitch, with Robinson scoring her on a single to right, taking second on an error by the right fielder.

Chavez started the rally in the sixth, reaching on a bunt, Boldt followed with a single to left and after Jenna Trim walked to load the bases, Savana Martinez brought the first run of the inning in on a blooper to right. A single to right by Bramson scored Boldt and Archuleta singled to left two at-bats later to score Trim to tie the game. Hathoot gave the Lobos the lead on the next at-bat with a single to center that scored Bramson and Robinson.

After the Aggies had a runner reach second in the sixth, Amber Linton retired the side in the seventh to secure the win.

Linton started the game and was replaced by Taylor Snow in the second. Snow threw 0.2 innings before Trim entered in the circle and faced three batters before Linton reentered in the third. From the fourth to the seventh inning, Linton didn’t allow a hit or a run to score to get the win.

UP NEXT: After the last 13 games on the road, the Lobos return home to host San José State in a three-game series starting Friday.
