Lobos Have Strong Opening Round at Clover Cup

MESA, Ariz. – The New Mexico women’s golf team had a strong opening round on Friday at the Clover Cup as play began at Longbow Golf Club. The Lobos shot 4-under during the first round to end the day in second place, one shot off the lead.

The No. 50 Lobos are one shot behind No. 10 Texas A&M, who holds the 18-hole lead at 5-under. No. 29 Clemson (3-under), No. 31 Georgia (1-over) and No. 46 Tennessee (8-over) round out the top five.

Lauren Lehigh shot a 3-under 69 to be part of a six-way tie for the individual lead after 18 holes. She leads four Lobos in the individual top 12 as Myah McDonald is T-8th after a 1-under 71 and Chloe Lauer and Jenny Lertsadwattana are both T-12th after shooting even par 72 on Friday. Maria Caparros Levin rounded out the lineup win an 82 and Sophia Zamarripa shot 78 while playing as an individual.

“Everyone played pretty steady today and we had a good birdie count,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We still need to conquer the par-5s, but we put ourselves in a good position after the first round.”

The Clover Cup will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday at Longbow Golf Club.
