COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico Lobo women’s tennis team took care of business in their season opener, winning 72 of 76 games as New Mexico won in a runaway 6-0 over the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves.  CSUP dropped to 0-4.

The Lobos won both of the doubles matches that were played, as UNM sat their top doubles team of Maud Vandeputte and Hsuan Huang.  Sarah O’Connor and Maria Sodre moved up to No. 1 doubles and won 6-0 over Sonrisa Bustamante and Alyssa Wells.  Satoho Toriumi and Sofia Taborga moved up to No. 2 and won 6-1 over Avery Soto and Malaya Pendon.

That set the way for singles, and UNM encountered no resistence.  Katherine Jhang took down Malaya Pendon 6-0, 6-0, and Maria Sodre gave UNM a 3-0 lead with an equal whitewash 6-0, 6-0 win over Alyssa Wells at No. 3 singles.  Sarah O’Connor, in her first match at No. 1 singles, took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tilly Blasdale to give UNM the clinching victory.

UNM’s Sataho Toriumi and Sofia Taborga made sure CSUP stayed off the scoreboard. Toriumi played at No. 4 and won 6-2, 6-0 over Sonrisa Bustamante and Sofia Taborga gave UNM a third shutout, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles over Alyssa Wells.

NOTES:  UNM defeated CSUP last season on the opening weekend 5-0 … O’Connor played No. 2 or No. 3 singles in 2022 … two transfers, Leonie Hoppe and Maud Vandeputte, did not play in the match, along with Hsuan Huang.
