by Steve Kirkland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Jamal Mashburn, Jr. was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Mashburn was honored after helping the Lobos to a pair of home victories last week against San Jose State and Boise State.

In the two victories, Mashburn averaged 22.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He shot 50% (5-10) from 3-point range and 90.9% (10-11) from the free throw line in the wins.

On Tuesday, Mashburn had a team-high 20 points to go along with five rebounds in the 77-57 victory over San Jose State, the Lobos’ largest margin of victory in a conference game in three seasons. On Friday, Mashburn had a season-high 25 points and a career-high seven rebounds in the 81-79 overtime win over Boise State, who entered the game tied for the conference lead. Mashburn played a career-high 43 minutes and tied a career high with four three-pointers against the Broncos.

It is the first Mountain West Player of the Week recognition of Mashburn’s career and the third by a Lobo this season, joining Morris Udeze, who was honored on Nov. 28, and Jaelen House, who was honored last week. It marks the first time since 2012-13 that three different Lobos earned the honor, when Tony Snell, Alex Kirk and Kendall Williams were all recognized.

New Mexico (18-2, 5-2 MW) will visit Nevada on Monday night before returning home to host Air Force on Friday.
