Women’s Soccer Returns Home Sunday to Host Colorado State

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team returns home Sunday afternoon to host Colorado State in its Mountain West home opener. The Lobos and Rams will kick-off at 1:00 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex in a game that will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.

Sunday’s game is the Lobos annual match for childhood cancer awareness. The Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico exists to help New Mexico’s children with cancer and their families cope with the day-to-day educational, emotional and financial needs of living with and fighting cancer. Fans at Sunday’s game can support CCFNM by donating and buying t-shirts near the marketing table.

The Lobos (2-2-4, 0-0-1 MW), enter the game on a three-game unbeaten streak after a 1-1 draw at Wyoming on Thursday in their conference opener. Jaelyn Hendren scored in the 66th minute of that contest to tie the game six minutes after the Cowgirls took the lead. Jadyn Edwards leads UNM with six goals and 13 points, both ranking second in the Mountain West.

The Rams (4-3-2, 1-0-0 MW) were one of two Mountain West teams to win their conference opener (four conference games finished in ties), posting a 2-0 win at San Diego State on Thursday. Liv Layton leads CSU with three goals this season.

New Mexico leads the all-time series 9-1-0, including a 4-0-0 record in Albuquerque. UNM won last year’s contest 1-0 in Fort Collins on a first-half goal from Paige Satterlee.

New Mexico travel to Colorado Springs next week for a pair of Mountain West games, visiting Air Force on Thursday and Colorado College on Sunday.
