Lobos Blank UC San Diego 2-0 to Open Road Trip

by Steve Kirkland

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team opened a two-game road trip Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over UC San Diego at the Triton Soccer Complex. The Lobos (2-2-2) scored a goal in each half and held the Tritons (1-4-1) off the board to post their first clean sheet of the season.

Zaria Katesigwa and Jadyn Edwards scored for the Lobos, while Alli Davis made four saves in net to record her first career shutout for New Mexico.

The Lobos took little time taking a 1-0 with a goal in the second minute. Katesigwa scored off a through ball from Leilani Baker for her first goal of the season. It was the earliest goal for the Lobos since the 2020 (spring 2021) season when Gwen Maly scored after 40 seconds against Colorado State. UNM nearly doubled the lead midway through the half when the Triton keeper made back-to-back saves to rob Edwards, but the score remained 1-0 at the break.

Early in the second half, Katesigwa nearly had her second of the season as a breakaway attempt went just wide. New Mexico doubled its lead in the 70th minute as Edwards knocked in a corner kick from Paris Dalton for a 2-0 lead. It was Edwards’ sixth goal of the season, extending her Mountain West leading total.

The Tritons outshot the Lobos 14-12 overall, but UNM had the edge in shots on goal, 6-4, and corner kicks, 4-1. Alli Davis made two saves in each half to secure the clean sheet.

“I am proud of our response coming off a tough weekend,” said head coach Heather Dyche. “We showed some grit and leadership and that led to getting a good road win tonight.”

The Lobos will conclude its non-conference schedule on Sunday with a visit to UC Riverside. Game time is noon MT (11 a.m. PT) and the game will air on ESPN+.
