Lobos Travel to Colorado for Road Opener on Saturday

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – The New Mexico men’s basketball team makes its first road trip of the season as it travels to Colorado for a Saturday afternoon contest with the Buffaloes. Game time is 4:30 p.m. and the game will air on the Pac-12 Network Mountain Channel and on the Sports Animal (KNML-610 AM) in Albuquerque.

The Lobos are looking to win their road opener for the second straight year and the third time in the past four seasons. Both teams enter the contest with a 1-0 record. New Mexico topped FAU 99-92 on Wednesday in The Pit, while Colorado rallied for a 94-90 overtime win over Montana State on Tuesday.

Colorado holds an 8-7 edge in the all-time series, having won the last two meetings, in 2017-18 in Boulder and in 2018-19 at The Pit. The Lobos’ last win over the Buffaloes came in the 2010 Las Vegas Classic at the Orleans Arena. UNM last won in Boulder in the season-opener of the 2007-08 season, a 54-47 victory in the Lobo coaching debut of Steve Alford.

New Mexico is coming off the 99-92 win over FAU in the first game of the Richard Pitino era. Five Lobo newcomers scored in double figures in their UNM debuts, led by Jaelen House’s career-high 30 points. It was the second-most points in a Lobo debut in program history and the first 30-point game in a season opener for New Mexico since Lamont Long scored 31 in the 1997-98 season-opening win over USC. In total, newcomers scored 92 of the team’s 99 points as Jay Allen-Tovar (18 pts), Gethro Muscadin (18 pts), Jamal Mashburn, Jr. (14 pts) and KJ Jenkins (10 pts) also scored in double figures.

After Saturday’s game, the Lobos return home for a three-game homestand against Grambling State (Nov. 15), Montana State (Nov. 20) and Western New Mexico (Nov. 22). Tickets for those games are available at GoLobos.com/tickets.
