Lobo Soccer heads to Fresno State for key conference matchup

by Alma Solis

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobos continue to fight on the road to get back into the win column. After dropping their match, 1-0, to San Jose State on Thursday night, New Mexico faces Mountain West leader Fresno State in Fresno, Calif., for a critical conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (MT).

Fresno State (7-4-3, 5-1-1 MW) are coming off a gritty 1-0 win in double overtime over San Diego State, one of the other best teams in the conference. In the match, the teams went 107 minutes before the Bulldogs got the golden goal. The Bulldogs are diligent in their play, earning 10 corner kicks and only accounting for one offside call the entire game while San Diego State had nine offside calls. Fresno State is unbeaten in its last 15 home matches, going 12-0-3 in that span dating back to Oct. 3, 2019.

The Lobos are trying to break a two-game losing streak to continue to fight for a top spot in the conference standings. Despite the three-game skid in which New Mexico has not won a game, the Lobos still lead in almost every offensive category in the Mountain West. Jadyn Edwards continues to lead in shots (61), shots on goal (27), and points (19). Zaria Katesigwa also still leads the conference in goals (8) and points (19). The Lobos also continue to showcase their strong defense who constantly win balls back for the Lobos, earn goal kicks, block shots and notch crucial team saves, highlighted by Karlee Maes and Myah Isais.

After this match, New Mexico returns home for its senior night on Oct. 21. The Lobos will host Colorado College at 7:30 p.m. (MT).
