Men Go 5-1 in Tucson on Day One

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Lobos had a fantastic opening day at the Tucson Invitational, sending three players in the semifinals in their respective draws, and winning both doubles matches as well, moving those two teams in to the semis as well.

In the Blue Draw, Joel Pierleoni defeated Tom Hann of Gonzaga 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a solid comeback win to move into the semifinals where he will face off against Arizona’s Gustaf Strom, a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 winner over NAU’s Alex Groves.  In the White Draw, Alex Maggs handled Morgan Donovan of NAU with ease 6-1, 6-2, catapulting him into the semifinals against Jared Horwood of Arizona, who took down Stan Samucewicz of Grand Canyon  6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

UNM’s other semifinalist is Nicolas Prieto, who had a first round bye and then took down New Mexico State’s Ryan Ford 6-1, 6-2.  He will face Daniel Dillon of NAU, who beat Grzegorz Rudnicki of Grand Canyon 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).  The only loss UNM suffered was by Georgio Samaha, who fell in his opening round match 6-4, 6-4 to GCU’s Freddie Grant.  Samaha continues in the backdraw and will take on NAU’s Chris Steele.

In doubles, Pierleoni and Maggs teamed for a 6-4 win over NAU’s Dominik Buzonics and Alex Groves, and Prieto and Samaha beat Wyatt Anderson and Rudnicki of Grand Canyon.  Pierleoni and Maggs face Gijs Akkermans and Corey Clarke of NMSU for a berth in the Blue Doubles Draw finals.  Prieto and Samaha take on Arthus Bassetiere and Theo McDonald of Grand Canyon for a berth in the Red Doubles Draw finals.
