Lobos Finish Second in MW in 2020-21 Directors' Cup, 80th Overall

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Following the 2020-21 academic year in which The University of New Mexico Lobos won six Mountain West Championships and appeared in six NCAA postseason competitions, the Lobos finished 80th in the Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup final standings with a total of 225.5 points.

The Lobos were second among Mountain West schools and seventh among non-Power 5 FBS schools.

“Through the adversity that our student-athletes faced, it’s great to receive this type of recognition for our teams and our department,” said Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez. “We strive for excellence in everything we do. It’s another example of the tremendous job our student-athletes did this year on the field, and it pairs perfectly with the record-breaking year academically.”

The Directors’ Cup is a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today that considers all sports within college athletic programs. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships.

Of the 225.5 points, 103.5 were earned from spring sports and 122.0 from fall sports, with women’s cross country accounting for 72 points, women’s soccer for 50 points, men’s golf 33 points, men’s tennis 25 points, women’s golf 23 points and women’s track and field 22.5 points.

In the 28-year history of the Directors’ Cup, the Lobos have finished in the top 100 for 19 consecutive years.

The Division I Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup standing will start up again after the fall 2021 NCAA championships.
