EUGENE, Ore. — Former athlete on The University of New Mexico track and field team Courtney Frerichs has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after finishing in second place in the 3000m steeplechase at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a time of 9:11.79. Current Lobo Abdirizak Ibraham has advanced to the semifinal round of the men’s 1500m after finishing 10th overall with a time of 3:40.04.

Frerichs kept a steady pace through the entirety of the race, right until the last lap before she was passed by Emma Coburn. Regardless, Frerichs finished more than six seconds before the third-place finisher. Frerichs will now compete for the U.S. at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo in August.

Ibrahim is competing to represent The United States in the same respect after qualifying for the semifinal round of the men’s 1500m. Ibrahim finished the first round in seventh place of his heat and in 10th place overall with a time of 3:40.04. The semifinal round will be Friday at 5:05 p.m. MT.
