Lobo Student-Athletes Score Third-Best GPA in History

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a Spring season where at just about every program at UNM was in season and competing, Lobo student-athletes didn’t forget to take care of business in the classroom.  Lobo student-athletes recorded a 3.36 GPA, the third-best grade point average in the history of the program.  The top four GPAs in program history have all occurred in the last four semesters.

It also gave UNM athletics a 3.35 cumulative GPA for the past academic year, the second-best in school history, and the combined 3.41 GPA over the last two years is the best two-year stretch as well.

It marked the 26th straight semester that Lobo student-athletes turned in at least a 3.0 GPA, dating back to the fall of 2008.  Overall, 79 student-athletes recorded a 4.0 or better GPA and 290 recorded a 3.0 or better GPA.

Additionally, UNM’s female student-athletes turned in a 3.59 GPA, tying for the second-highest mark in school history and the 22nd straight semester with at least a 3.4 GPA.  It was the second straight semester with a 3.59 GPA.  UNM’s male student-athletes had a 3.12 GPA, the 19th semester in the last 20 with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Among individual programs, the women’s golf team turned in the second highest-GPA by any program in the history of Lobo Athletics with a 4.02 GPA.  It marked the just the fifth 4.0 GPA in school history. Women’s golf has twice in a row been named the Academic National Champion in women’s golf, and could possibly repeat that later this summer.

Of note, women’s tennis had a 3.94 GPA and it keeps a remarkable string under coach Vicky Maes as the program has now recorded a 3.90 or better in four straight semesters.  Women’s soccer also turned in a top-five program GPA.

On the men’s side, golf recorded a 3.74 GPA, the top mark among all men’s sports and the third-best in the history of their sport.  Lobo football had its second ever 3.0 semester, with both marks coming in the three semesters under Danny Gonzales.
