Lobos Add Renczes and Işıl Şeren to 2021-22 Roster

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Head coach Mike Bradbury and staff have signed Zeyno Işıl Şeren and Rebeka Renczes to the 2021-22 roster, with both bringing a wide breadth of international experience.

“These two international freshmen will bring depth, versatility and scoring to our team next season,” stated Bradbury, who is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Lobos.

Zeyno Işıl Şeren | 5-10 | G | Ankara, Turkey

A guard from Ankara, Turkey, Işıl Şeren joins the Lobos having played with the U16 Turkish National Team at the 2019 FIBA European Championships and 2019 Baku Youth Olympics, and played with the BOTAŞ Sports Club.

“Zeyno brings a lot of versatility to our perimeter game, being able to play any guard spot,” Bradbury commented. “She can score at every level and has the ability to make tough shots.”

Standing 5-10, Işıl Şeren averaged 23.2 minutes on the court, 4.0 rebounds per game, 1.6 assists per game and 1.4 steals per game with the national team.

With BOTAS, she averaged 16.2 points, 5.1 assists, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in the European Championships and twice won the Ankara Championship with BOTAS.  Additionally, the Turkish Lobo was named Athlete of the Year by her TED Ankara College Private High School.

“I picked UNM because the staff helped me feel the family environment in their communication during the recruitment process,” Işıl Şeren stated. “Besides that, I’m super excited to play in front of New Mexico’s great fans at The Pit. Go Lobos!”

Rebeka Renczes | 5-7 | PG | Szekszard, Hungary

From Szekszard, Hungary, Renczes played on the U16 Hungary National Team and competed in the 2019 FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship.

“Rebeka brings us some depth at the point guard, which was something we were looking for this spring,” Bradbury noted. “Her ability to pass and see the floor will make her a great addition to our offense.”

A 5-7 point guard, Renczes averaged 6.0 points, 2.9 assists, 2.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals while averaging 21.5 minutes. Further, she played for Atomerőmű KSC Szekszárd, winning the national championship in 2019 and finishing third in 2018 with the team.

While playing for her high school, Garay Janos Secondary School, Renczes averaged 22.1 points, 9.0 assists and 6.3 steals during the 2019 season and 17.3 points, 6.1 assists and 2.9 steals during the 2021 season. Her high school won the Hungarian School Sport Federation championship in 2020 after finishing third in 2019 and for her performance, Renczes was named an all-star in 2019 by the Hungarian School Sport Federation.

“I chose UNM because I’d like to grow as a player and as a person,” Renczes stated. “The coaching staff was professional and friendly during the recruitment process and I like the way the team plays.

“I can’t wait to play in The Pit and be a part of the Lobo family.”

Işıl Şeren and Renczes are the fourth and fifth signings for the 2021 class, joining Aniyah Augmon, Mackenzie Curtis and Vianè Cumber.
