New Mexico Draws Navy in First Round of the NCAA Tournament

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011, the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team will face Navy (4-4-2) in the first round, tabbed to take place April 27 at 4 p.m. MT at the Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson, North Carolina. The entire NCAA Tournament will be held in the state of North Carolina.

The Lobos most recently won the Mountain West Regular Season Championship, advancing New Mexico to the Big Dance. The Lobos (10-1-0, MW 10-1-0) defeated the San Diego State Aztecs 3-2 in overtime at the UNM Soccer Complex for the Title, with junior Jadyn Edwards scoring the golden goal in the 96th minute. Edwards was a star for the team, scoring two of the Lobos’ three goals on the night.

Due to the unique circumstances of this 2020-21 season, the NCAA Tournament will only have 48 teams competing with 16 national seeds earning a bye into the second round of the championship. The winner between Navy and New Mexico will advance, facing the fourth-seeded TCU Horned Frogs three days later on Friday, Apr. 30 in Wilson.

This will be the first-ever matchup between New Mexico and Navy. Similar to the Lobos, Navy earned their way into the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament field via the Patriot League’s automatic qualifying bid. In the Patriot League Finals on Saturday at Colgate University, the Mids and Raiders tied 1-1, though Navy was able to earn the berth in the NCAA Tournament with a 4-1 showing in penalty kicks.
