Lobos to Host Mountain West Conference Finals Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team is set to host the San Diego State Aztecs in the final match of the regular season to determine the Spring 2021 MW Champion and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is tabbed to take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the UNM Soccer Complex and will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network.

Mountain Division winner New Mexico owns a 9-1 record heading into the final match of the regular season. With senior Emily Johnson in goal, New Mexico has posted seven shutouts this year. Johnson ranks 14th in the nation in goals-against average (.377). Offensively, the Lobos are paced by senior Gwen Maly, who leads the conference with nine goals and has recorded three assists this season.

The top two offensive teams in the MW, the Lobos and Aztecs have recorded 25 goals each this year. Additionally, both New Mexico and San Diego State are among the top 20 nationally in points per game this season. UNM ranks No. 14 with 7.1 points per game, while San Diego State is No. 17 with 6.9 points per game.

The Aztecs, who won the West Division, have posted an 8-2 record during the 2021 spring season. SDSU is led by senior Chole Frisch, who has scored a team-leading six goals. Frisch also leads the league in shots (41) and shots on goal (21). Defensively, Alexa Maduena has posted two shutouts and 30 saves during her freshman campaign.

It is highly encouraged to purchase your tickets online as the UNM Soccer Complex will be functioning at a limited capacity in accordance with the current state health order. If available, tickets can be purchased at the gate before the game. No cash will be accepted at the venue.
