Men's Golf Travels to Thunderbird Collegiate Friday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is back on the course after a lengthy break in schedule as the Lobos are set to travel to Phoenix, Ariz. to compete in the Thunderbird Collegiate hosted by Arizona State.

Competition at the 7,319-yard, par-70 Papago Golf Course will begin Friday, April 16, with 36 holes followed by the final 18 holes on Saturday, April 17. The Lobos will tee off at 8:30 a.m. PT (9:30 a.m. MT).

The Lobos are currently ranked No. 31 in the nation by GolfStat and will be joined by Mountain West squads Colorado State and UNLV in the field. Eight of the teams competing are ranked in the top 35 in the country.

Also competing in the Thunderbird is No. 20 Arizona, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 32 Baylor, Iowa State, No. 16 North Carolina, Ohio State, No. 3 Oklahoma State, Oregon State, No. 29 South Florida, No. 26 Texas Tech, TCU, UCLA and Utah.

The Lobos enter the tournament having not competed since March 21 where they finished seventh of 18 teams at the N.I.T. hosted by Arizona.

New Mexico has competed in four tournaments so far this season and junior Sam Choi has led the Lobos in all of them, with sophomore Albert Boneta tying for the Lobo lead in the first tournament of the season.

UNM’s lineup for the Thunderbird is set to consist of Choi, Boneta, freshman Bastien Amat, junior Brandon Shong and freshman Matthew Watkins. Watkins makes his collegiate debut on the weekend.
