Choi Named Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Junior Sam Choi of The University of New Mexico men’s golf team was named Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week on Thursday following outstanding performances over the last two weeks.

The honor marks the third for Choi in his career after he earned the accolade twice as a sophomore. He is currently ranked by GolfStat 29th in the nation.

Choi led the Lobos at the N.I.T. at OMNI Tucson National, the course for the 2021 Mountain West Tournament, on March 20-21 tying for fourth place in a field of 104 golfers.

Choi carded a 12-under par 204 in a field featuring four top-10 teams and nine individuals in the top 50 of the GolfStat rankings. He posted his best round of the tournament, a season-best 67, in round two.

In addition, Choi finished tied for first in par-3 scoring (2.83) and tied for sixth overall in par-5 scoring (4.25) while posting the third-most birdies in the event (18).

Prior to this week’s performance, Choi led the Lobos at the George Hannon Intercollegiate where he led UNM to a fifth-place finish behind four top-20 ranked teams, shooting a one-under par.

Choi and the rest of the Lobos are set to tee off once again on April 16-17 at the Thunderbird Collegiate hosted by Arizona State.
