Mehringer Officially Joins Staff at QBs Coach
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Drew Mehringer, who most recently was the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Florida Atlantic, has officially been named passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He replaced Jordan Salkin, who served as quarterbacks coach in 2020 and has since moved on to the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant.
Mehringer brings with him a breadth of experience that belies his 33 years of age, having served as a skill position coach for quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends and having served as a coordinator of some sort since 2014. He comes to UNM from Florida Atlantic, where he served as the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach in 2020, and was slated to slide over to tight ends in 2021, working under Willie Taggart. Wideouts comprised the top five pass catching slots for FAU as the Owls went undefeated at home and advanced to the Montgomery Bowl, taking on Memphis.
He spent three seasons at Texas, from 2017-19 working under Tom Herman, the third of three separate stints with Herman. At Texas Mehringer served as receivers coach and passing game coordinator, and throughout his time receivers were standouts. In 2018, three juniors made a huge impact on Texas, including Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who had 86 catches for 1,176 yards (third-most in Texashistory) and nine touchdowns. Collin Johnson finished just 15 yards shy of giving Texas two 1,000-yard receivers, but combined their 2,161 yards was the second-most by a Longhorn duo in a season.
Mehringer spent the 2016 season at Rutgers as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, where he was the youngest play-caller in the Power 5, installing a new offense to boot. One of his wins in 2016 was a 37-28 win over New Mexico. He went to Rutgers after his second stint with Tom Herman, serving as recruiting coordinator and receivers coach. That 2015 season was a standout one for the Cougars, winning 13 games and the American championship. The Cougars played in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, beating No. 9 Florida State 38-24. Houston ended the year ranked No. 8 and the team was bolstered by an offense that ranked 20th nationally and 10th in scoring (40.4 points per game). Four of Mehringer’s charges recorded at least 25 catches, including First Team All-AAC wideout Demarcus Ayers.
