Lobo 2021 Schedule Officially Announced

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The second year of the Danny Gonzales era of Lobo Football will feature six home games, two each in September, October and November, and even better, it will get started two days earlier.  The Mountain West officially announced the 2021 football schedule, and along with it, UNM has announced that the season opener against Houston Baptist has been moved up two days to Thursday, September 2.

The home schedule features several regional rivals coming to University Stadium, including a non-conference matchup on September 11 at home with New Mexico State.  The 2020 season did not see the traditional Lobo-Aggie matchup, ending a streak of 74 consecutive years with the game being played.  The opening two games are UNM’s only two consecutive home games of the season

UNM’s other non-conference matchups will take place in Texas, with a September 18 meeting at Texas A&M in College Station and a September 25 matchup with UTEP in El Paso.

Conference play for UNM will start in October with a visit from the Air Force Falcons on October 2, followed by a trip to San Diego State on October 9.  UNM head coach Danny Gonzales spent seven years on staff at San Diego State under Rocky Long, who was SDSU’s head coach from 2011-19.

UNM will take on Colorado State in another good regional rivalry game at University Stadium, this on October 16.  The team will then travel to Wyoming on October 23 before an open date the following week.

November will see UNM open at home against UNLV on the 6th before back-to-back road games.  On November 13 UNM travels to Fresno State and then to Boise State on November 20.  UNM’s final home game would be on November 27 hosting Utah State.

Lobo Football is currently conducting spring practice, and the team will have an open practice on Saturday morning inside University Stadium starting at 9:30 am.  Fans should enter the stadium through the southwest corner, which is Gate 1.  Fans should adhere to all social distancing guidelines and wear a mask inside the stadium.

NOTES:  UNM is playing Utah State on Thanksgiving weekend for the third straight year … UNM’s opponents were a combined 32-40 in 2020 … Texas A&M won the Orange Bowl and finished the year ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press poll.

CORRECTION: The original story and graphic mixed up the dates of the New Mexico State and Texas A&M games.  We regret the error.
