ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team returns to the court this week after canceling its series with San Diego State last week. The Lobos will take on the Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins, Colo. on Tuesday at 9 p.m. MT on FS1.
The Lobos (5-11, 1-11 MW) enter their eighth Mountain West series of the season coming off of a pair of close losses to Fresno State, the first of which was an overtime final score of 64-62. Despite the tough season and unusually lop-sided record, the Lobos are currently ranked fourth in the nation in offensive rebounds (14.19 per game).
Colorado State (14-4, 11-3 MW) is 4-1 over its last five games and is riding a two-win streak with a pair of victories over Wyoming in Laramie on Feb. 4-6.
New Mexico is led by senior Makuach Maluach who averages 14.0 points on the season and 13.1 points per game in conference play. Maluach also leads the team in rebounds with 5.8 per game overall and 4.8 in league play.
The Rams are led by three players averaging scoring in double figures including sophomore David Roddy (15.9, 16.1 MW), sophomore Isaiah Stevens (14.9, 14.8 MW) and junior Kendle Moore (10.7, 10.8 MW). Roddy posts a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game, 9.6 in conference play.
SERIES HISTORY
The Rams are one of UNM’s oldest basketball rivals, dating back to 1940-41. The teams have played 126 games, marking the seventh-most games against an opponent in UNM history. New Mexico leads the series 78-48 and in HC Paul Weir’s tenure, the Lobos are 4-3 against the Rams.
The teams competed just once last season but split two of the last three series’ prior to last season. The one series that wasn’t split in Weir’s tenure was the 2017-18 series which the Lobos swept. UNM is 25-34 all-time in Fort Collins and has gone 4-6 over the last 10 matchups in Moby Arena. Colorado State has claimed the last two meetings on its home court.
THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 57-58 in his fourth year at the helm of the Lobos, 85-64 in his fifth season as a head coach. Colorado State head coach Niko Medved is 46-36 in his third season with the Rams and is 125-123 in his career.
