Mountain West Announces New Men's Hoops Conference Schedule

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Mountain West announced the updated 2020-21 men’s basketball conference slate Tuesday morning. The New format emphasizes the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches and staff while significantly reducing travel.

The league has moved to a 20-game schedule under a modified format that will play out over 11 weeks within the context of state, county and local guidelines.

In the new format, Mountain West teams will face each other in a two-game series in the same week with a one-day break in between contests. Each institution will have five scheduled home and five road series, reducing the regular season travel schedule by four weeks to help mitigate potential virus exposures.

The Lobos are set to begin conference play with a road series at Boise State on Dec. 3 and Dec. 5 followed by four scheduled home contests with a pair of series’ against Nevada (Dec. 31 & Jan. 2) and Utah State (Jan. 7 & Jan. 9).

The remaining series’ will alternate home and away as UNM takes on UNLV (away), San José State (home), Fresno State (away), San Diego State (home), Colorado State (away), Wyoming (home) and Air Force (away).

Under the new format, the Lobos will now play each Mountain West squad twice, as opposed to the previous format which featured a pair of teams that UNM would face just once.

This year’s model has been adopted for one year specifically to address the unique challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Conference play will determine the seeding for the 2021 MW Men’s Basketball Championship, which will be held March 10-13 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Mountain West national television partners CBS and FOX Sports will now initiate a selection procedure, which will include the shifting of games from their current dates. Additional announcements on television selections will be made soon.
