Lobo Baseball JC Class Tabbed No. 12

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For the second straight year, The University of New Mexico baseball program showed up with the #12 JC recruiting class in the country as analyzed by JBB Sports.  JBB Sports is considered the #1 JC blog in the country.

JBB follows junior college players and their recruitment across the country. JBB ranked UNM as the #12 class in the country in its recent ranking on JUCO players that made it to campus.  The Lobos also ranked second among all institutions in the Mountain or Pacific time zones, behind only Cal State Northridge, which ranked fourth.  UNM was listed ahead of such prominent baseball schools and heavy hitters such as Arizona State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State.

“Recruiting is like shaving, if you don’t do it every day, you look bad.”

Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham gave all the credit to UNM recruiting coordinator Jon Coyne. “Jon has busted his tail on the recruiting trail. He works hard every day,” said Birmingham.  “Recruiting is like shaving, if you don’t do it every day, you look bad.”

Last year the Lobos went 14-4 and was sitting on the edge of the top 25 when the COVID-19 crisis finished the season. UNM, which has been ranked in the top 25 six times over the last 10 years, has seen a rejuvenation in talent since Coyne arrived.

“Jon has all my praise”, said Birmingham. “Hard working young coach.”
