Lobos Get Nine on Athlon Preseason Teams

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The momentum for The University of New Mexico’s football teamam continues.  The team had nine players named to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-Mountain West team, with four players earning the nod on offense, two on defense and a league-leading three on special teams.

Overall, UNM’s nine was tied for sixth in the 12 team league.  The Lobos had no first team selections, but they led the way with five on the second team.  Offensively, tight end Marcus Williams and center Kyle Stapley were both put on the second team, and Jacobi Hearn  at linebacker was the defense’s lone second teamer.  Two specialists, punter Tyson Dyer  and kick returner Elijah Lilly , where also named second team.

Teton Saltes was UNM’s only third team selection, earning the nod for the offensive line.  Three made it to the fourth team, with kicker Andrew Shelley , running back Bryson Carroll  and corner back Donte Martin all picking up honors.

Boise State led the way with 17 selections, and UNM was just two selections away from second in the league as San Diego State and Hawai’i each had 11 picks.

New Mexico opens the season on August 29 against Idaho State at Dreamstyle Stadium, and tickets are on sale.
