@UNMLoboFB on Twitter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — And then it was down to one.  Quincy Black took the vote in a stacked field to become the fifth and final defensive back on the UNM Lobo Football #BestOfThe2000s team.  He becomes the 29th member of the squad, and just one slot left, for all-purpose player, is left to decide.

Black won the fifth and final vote by grabbing 42.3% of the vote, edging Gabriel Fulbright and DeAndre Wright.  Destry Berry finished fourth in the voting.

The series is a way to engage Lobo fans with the current situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Black started his career as a linebacker, but his move to safety in the 2006 season was not only his path to success, but his path to the NFL.  Black recorded 114 tackles in 2006, the most by a Lobo safety in the 2000s, and the most by a Lobo safety since Brian Urlacher had 154 in 1999.  He was a first team All-Mountain West selection at safety in 2006, and he played in the 2007 East-West Shrine Game.  He was named the team’s defensive MVP as a senior in 2006

Only one interception in the last 24 seasons has been returned longer than his 88-yard touchdown return against BYU in October of 2006.  He turned his terrific career into a a solid NFL career.  He was selected in the third round by Tampa Bay and played for six seasons, recording 283 tackles and three interceptions.
