Men's Hoops Adds Point Guard Transfer Singleton

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball program has added a decorated point guard to the 2020-21 roster with the addition of junior college transfer Saquan Singleton, the program announced Wednesday.

Singleton, a transfer from Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas, signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) on Wednesday.

Singleton comes to the Lobos after racking up the honors at HCC, including earning 2020 All-Region VI Men’s Basketball Second Team and All-Jayhawk West First Team accolades. He finished last season as Hutchinson’s leading rebounder, assist and steals leader and was the Blue Dragons’ fifth-leading scorer. He also ranked in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) top 20 in seven different categories.

Last season, Singleton averaged 11.8 points per game while shooting 54.4 percent from the field and averaging a team-high 7.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.5 steals with 30 total blocked shots in 30.8 minutes per game.

“Saquan separated himself from all of the other prospects we were looking at for his position this spring with his incredible character and commitment to team success,” head coach Paul Weir said. “He was our number one choice for this spring class and I am glad we were his number one as well.”

Singleton ranked third in the KJCCC in assists, sixth in rebounding, ninth in minutes played, 13th in field-goal percentage, 15th in blocked shots and 16th in the league in steals. He also posted a triple-double of 14 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists this season while racking up three other double-doubles on the season.

He tallied 156 assists in his 2019-20 campaign, marking the 10th-most in Blue Dragon single-season history and his 260 career assists mark the sixth-most in Hutchinson history.

Prior to his time at Hutchinson, he was a 1,000-point, All-League scorer at Monsignor Scanlan High School in Bronx, N.Y. where he averaged 15 points, five assists and seven rebounds per game.

“UNM was one of the first schools to recruit me coming out of junior college and I felt the love and energy from the coaches and the team,” Singleton said. “Plus I can’t wait to play in front of the best fans in the country! #ProtectThePit”
