Lobos Finish Third, Mark Best Finish of the Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team registered its best finish of the season on Tuesday, placing third at the Rebel Beach Invitational hosted by UNLV and Long Beach State. The Lobos were led by two finishers in the top 10 on the individual leader board.

Sophomore Kamie Hamada led the Lobos on the tournament. She finished tied for seventh overall marking her best finish of the season. She also registered a season-low, single-round score of 71 in both rounds one and two. Her previous low round was a 73 (+1) at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational.  

Hamada completed the tournament with a final score of 215 (-1) while leading the Lobos with 11 birdies, finishing tied for seventh overall in the category. She also finished tied for sixth in par-4 scoring with an average of 4.00 (E).

Freshman Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana was the second Lobo to finish in the top 10 after placing ninth, also marking her best finish as a Lobo and her first in the top 10 finish. She carded a 71 (-1), 72 (E) and a 73 (+2) in rounds one, two and three, respectively, to finish an even 216 on the competition. 

Lersadwattana led the Lobos in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.75 (-3) tying for fifth overall in the category.

Junior Caroline Jansson and freshman Lauren Lehigh tied for 32nd in the field of 66 competitors. The Lobo duo finished the invite with scores of 226 (+10) over their three rounds. Jansson registered a 10-stroke improvement with her score of 70 (-2) in round three. She posted a score of 80 (+8) and a 76 (+6) in rounds one and two.

Freshman Chloe Lauer, who competed as an individual, was the next Lobo on the leader board. Lauer finished tied for 45th to mark her best finish as a Lobo. The freshman finished the day 15 over (231).

Rounding out the competition for the Lobos was freshman Alice Rindestig who placed 63rd after her three rounds of work. Rindestig, who registered a four-stoke improvement between rounds one and two, posted an 80 (+8) in round three to finish with a 338 (+22).

No. 3 USC claimed the victory with a final score of 839 (-25). Mountain West competitor Fresno State held its second-place position with a three-round total of 861 (-3), finishing just ahead of UNM which finished with a final score of 883 (+19) to round out the top three.

The Lobos’ third-place finish marks their best finish of the season. The squad’s previous best was ninth at the Branch on September 9, 2019. As a team, UNM improved in each round, shooting a 296 (+8), 294 (+6) and a 293 (+5) in rounds one, two and three, respectively.

Overall, the Lobos finished the tournament with 37 birdies, fourth-most overall, and placed third in par-3 and par-4 scoring with averages of 3.13 (+8) and 4.16 (+24), respectively.  

UNM will be back in action on Monday, Mar. 2 through Tuesday, Mar. 3 as the squad heads to Sacramento, Calif. for the Gunrock Invitational hosted by UC Davis.
