Lobos Record Four Wins; Split Tri-Meet at Pepperdine

The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team opened up the 2020 portion of the schedule in a split decision at the Pepperdine and Colorado State tri-meet on Wednesday afternoon in Malibu, Calif.

The Lobos earned a 166-68 victory over Pepperdine but lost to Mountain West opponent Colorado State 161-101.

UNM picked up four individual wins in the meet with sophomore Hedda Øritsland recording two wins and freshmen Olivia Bishop and Andrea Mariscal Guerra tallying the other two.

Bishop scored the first win of the day in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:54.12 and the Lobos would string together three consecutive wins later in the day. Oritsland’s two wins came in back-to-back events in the 50-yard free with a time of 23.91 and in the 100-yard free at 52.05 and Mariscal Guerra kept the Lobo win streak going with a win in the following event, the 200-yard backstroke, winning by almost a full second with 2:05.83.

In addition, of the 14 events, UNM posted five runner-up finishes and five third-place results with freshman Nicholle Toh accounting for two of the runner-up results and contributed to the relay team that also finished second. Underclassmen accounted for a large total of the team success across the board.

Finishing second in their events were freshman Camila Batista in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:36.55), Toh in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.06) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.44, just 0.3 seconds behind the winner), freshman Anya Hammond in the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.95), and the 200-yard medley relay team comprised of Breanna Wiercinski, Asami Terada, Toh and Øritsland, finishing in 1:45.45.

Hammond added a third-place showing in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:40.08 to give the Lobos two in the top three in the event and Talia Passarelli was the highest finisher for the Lobos in the 100-yard breaststroke with 1:06.78, one of three UNM swimmers to finish in the top five. Wiercinski swam 24.56 in the 50-yard freestyle to give the Lobos two in the top three and Terada finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.06, the first of four Lobos to finish in order in the event. Batista added a third-place result in the 500-yard freestyle to go with her earlier runner-up finish with a time of 5:14.46, giving UNM second and third in the event.

Up next for the Lobos is a home meet against New Mexico State on Jan. 25, the first and only home meet of the season for UNM.
