ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Sophomore outfielder Andrea Howard has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Second Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.  Howard is UNM’s second Google Cloud Academic All-America selection this year, and it extends UNM’s streak of years with at least two Academic All-America selections to 16 consecutive.  She is the 112th Lobo to earn Academic All-America honors.

Howard, an Albuquerque native, earned the distinction with a 4.05 grade-point-average in biology and was one of 11 student-athletes to be selected for the second team.

According to the CoSIDA official release, the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Softball Teams feature 21 members with a 4.0 GPA.

The Lobo was one of two Mountain West players to garner an All-America team selection, joined by Haley Donaldson who made third team.

Howard was chosen for the national award which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom after being selected for the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Softball Team. Howard was selected to the District 7 first team, which allowed her to be a candidate for the All-America team.

This is not the first academic accolade that Howard has acquired this year after being named a UNM scholar-athlete at the Lobo Scholar-Athlete Banquet in late April and was named to the UNM All-Academic Team as the top academic performer on the softball team.

Howard is the fourth Lobo softball player to earn an academic all-American nod, joining Tiffani Chambers (2002), Cayley Warner (2002) and current head softball coach Paula Congleton (1981, as well as honorable mention in 1980 and 1982).

On the season, Howard started in 46 games and tallied 24 hits, of which nine were doubles, two triples and three went for home runs. The outfielder accounted for 25 runs and 15 RBI while registering 24 walks and an on-base percentage of .327. In the outfield, Howard recorded 97 putouts, the third-most putouts on the team.

Howard tied for second on the team doubles, second in triples as well as walks and tied for fourth in home runs.
