Lobo pitching racks up 17 Ks in 6-4 win over Nevada

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Right-handers Drew Gillespie and Malachi Emond combined for a dominant pitching performance on the mound for the University of New Mexico on Friday night against Nevada. The duo combined to strikeout 17 opposing batters and helped lift UNM to a 6-4 win in the series opener.

The 17 combined strikeouts for the Lobos (16-17, 7-9 MW) on Friday night were the most in a game since they punched out 17 batters in a 10-inning game against Air Force last March. A lion’s share of the strikeout total was produced by Gillespie as he had a career-best 12 strikeouts in the start. The 12 Ks for the Gillespie also established a new single-season high for a Lobo pitcher, bettering the mark of 10 strikeouts, which was done twice by Justin Slaten.

Emond accounted for the final five strikeouts of the Lobo total as all but one of the outs he registered were via the punchout. The five Ks for Emond also tied a career-high for the senior hurler, an achievement done four times now and twice this season.

The strong work on the mound by Gillespie and Emond was backed up offensively as the Lobos reignited their power stroke. After not registering an extra-base hit in the series at San Jose State last weekend, the Lobos erupted for eight extra-base hits against the Wolf Pack (16-17, 6-10 MW) on Friday.

Of the eight extra-base hits, six were doubles with Jared Mang accounting for half of those. Connor Mang and Tanner Baker also doubled for the Lobos in the game. Hayden Schilling tripled, and freshman second baseman Tyler Kelly belted his first career home run.

The Lobos and Wolf Pack will continue their series on Saturday afternoon. Slaten is scheduled to get the ball for the Lobos with his first-pitch scheduled to take place at 2 p.m.
