Lobos even series behind productive bats; strong start from Garley

RENO, Nev. – The late-game rally that the University of New Mexico baseball team put together in Friday’s loss at Nevada carried over into Saturday as the Lobos scored nine runs on 12 hits en route to a 9-3 win, evening the series with the Wolf Pack.

The beneficiary of the productive Lobo (11-6, 3-2 MW) offense on Saturday was Nathaniel Garley. The junior right-hander was sharp once more as he improved to 4-0 on the season. Garley would work 7.0 innings, scattering five hits, allowing one earned run, walking none and striking out four.

The run support for Garley came before he even had to throw a single pitch as the Lobos scored a pair of runs in the top of the first. In that frame, Tyler Kelly led off with an infield single to second base. Hayden Schilling then moved him to third on a double to right field. During the next at-bat with Jared Mang at the plate, Kelly scored on a wild pitch and Schilling advanced to third. J. Mang then chased home Schilling on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Two more runs scored in the top of the third thanks to a two-run home run to left-centerfield off the bat of Connor Mang. A half inning later, the Lobos pushed across three runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead over the Wolf Pack (9-8, 2-3 MW).

All of that damage in the fourth came with two outs and was sparked by a single by Zack Doak, who was making his first collegiate start as the Lobo designated hitter. Following Doak’s single, Reese O’Farrell singles and the Kelly drove in Doak on a single to right. A walk to Schilling extended the inning to J. Mang, who promptly doubled home both O’Farrell and Kelly.

In the fifth, the Lobos took their largest lead of eight runs on a RBI groundout by Doak, scoring Tanner Baker, who reached on fielding error to begin the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Nevada broke through for their first run of the game as a leadoff double came around to score; the lone blemish on Garley’s outing.

The Lobos got that run back in the sixth on a J. Mang solo home run to right-centerfield.

Garley would keep the score at 9-1 in favor of the Lobos over the next two innings of work as pitched through seven innings for the third time this season.

Drew Marrufo came on in the eighth and allowed just one hit and struck out a batter as he pitched a scoreless frame. Freshman left-hander Matt Foster had the ninth as he made his collegiate debut. The Wolf Pack would score a pair of runs on one hit off of Foster to bring the score to its final of 9-3, but Foster did also register his first career strikeout in the outing.

The Lobos and Wolf Pack will play the rubber game of their series tomorrow afternoon with a scheduled first pitch time of 1 p.m.
