Lobos tripped up at home vs. Wyoming, 73-66

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A stretch of five games and nearly a month playing away from home ended on Saturday afternoon as the University of New Mexico women’s basketball returned to Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit and took on the University of Wyoming in an early-season conference clash. The Lobos would come out on the losing end of the contest falling to the Cowgirls by a score of 73-66.

Most of the stat categories played out rather even between the Lobos (6-3, 0-2 MW) and the Cowgirls (5-3, 2-0 MW) in the game with the exception of three-point shooting. In that category, Wyoming held an advantage and knocked down 10-of-20 from long range to finish with a 50% shooting mark. In the first half, however, that success was even greater for the Cowgirls as they were 7-of-11 (64%) from distance. Conversely, the Lobos shot 3-of-13 (23%) from three-point range in the first half.

That early success shooting the three-ball helped the Cowgirls create separation from the Lobos.

In the first quarter, play was tight as the largest lead for either team was five points. That apex lead for the Cowgirls came at the 4:17 mark of the period but was then followed by a 9-0 run by the Lobos over the next two minutes or so of game time. After the Cowgirls broke the run with a split trip to the line, the Lobos grabbed their largest lead of the game on the ensuing possession on a painted jumper by Jaedyn De La Cerda.

Wyoming closed out the final minute of the quarter, however on a 6-1 run to knot the game at 21-all through 10 minutes of action.

Action remained razor-thin in the second period with three tie scores and three lead changes through the first six minutes of game time. The last of those lead changes went in favor of the Cowgirls as Quinn Weidemann hit a three-pointer at the 4:21 mark.

The Cowgirls would hit two more threes in the quarter with the last of those giving them a five-point, 36-31, with 1:27 to go. The Lobos responded on their next trip down the court as Jayla Everett connected on a three-pointer. Everett nearly gave the Lobos the lead on their next possession as another three-pointer drew iron. That would send the game to halftime with Wyoming holding a two-point lead, 36-34.

In the third quarter, Wyoming began to pull away swelling their lead to double-digits at the 6:22 mark. They reached that advantage once more at the 2:33 mark of the period as the score was 55-44. Over the next 1:57, the Lobos roared back and ripped off an 8-0 run to close the gap to four points, 56-52 with 36 seconds left in the third. The Cowgirls beat the buzzer on the other end, however and took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Cowgirls would remain in front by a couple of possessions for nearly the entirety of the fourth quarter. The closest the Lobos would come was three points at the 9:19 mark on a three-pointer by Jayla Everett.

The Lobos has two players score in double figures with Everett and Aisia Robertson each scoring 14 points. Everett and Robertson also had three rebounds each. Everett paced the team with six assists. Jordan Hosey was the leading rebounder with nine. Hosey also had three blocks and six points.

The Lobos will remain at home for their next game as they will take on Northern New Mexico on Tuesday night. Tip-off for the non-conference game is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
