Men's Golf Ties for Fifth at Royal Oaks Invite

DALLAS, TEXAS — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished tied for fifth at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate hosted by Baylor on Tuesday. The squad was led by redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair who finished 12th overall to mark a new season-best finish after posting an outstanding six under in round three.

Sinclair shot a three-round total of three under, 210 with scores of 78 (+7), 67 (-4) and 65 (-6) in each round, respectively, improving an outstanding 13 strokes between the first and third rounds. His third-round score of 65 was good for a new season-best and he was one of just three competitors to notch that score. Sinclair tied for second in both par-5 scoring (4.33, -6) and in total birdies (15). Of his 15 birdies, he earned seven in round three, six in round two and two in round one.

Following for the Lobos was sophomore Sam Choi who shot an even 213 across his three rounds to tie for 19th. Choi performed his best in round three as he recorded a two under, 69 after shooting a 73 (+2) and a 71 (E) in the first two rounds, respectively. Choi also tied for second in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.33 (-6) and he brought in 11 birdies throughout the tournament.

New Mexico’s individual senior Sam Dickey finished in a tie for 34th with a score of four over, 217. Dickey led the squad in par-3 scoring, averaging 2.92 (-1) and his second-round score of 71 (E) marked his best score of the competition.

Junior Galven Green and freshman Albert Boneta each shot three-round scores of five over, 218 to tie for 37th overall. Boneta led the Lobos after day one as he sat in a tie for 17th with a two-round total of 142 (E), but finished round three with a five over, 76. Green led the team in pars as his total of 39 tied for fourth overall.

Sophomore Ignacio Arcaya finished the tournament tied for 52nd individually as he shot a nine over, 222 with first-and-third round scores of 73 (+2) and a second-round score of 76 (+5).

As a team, the Lobos finished with a three-round score of 851 (-1) to tie for fifth with Charlotte. The squad shot scores of 289 (+5), 280 (-4) and 282 (-1) in each round, respectively and its average of 4.62 (-17) on par-5s ranked first overall. UNM finished fourth in pars (173) and brought in 43 birdies across its three rounds.

SMU took home the team title at the competition after posting a score of 27 under, 825. Host Baylor followed in second at 16 under, 836 while Liberty’s score of 840 (-12) landed it in third. Individually, first-place was held in a four-way tie at 205 (-8) between SMU’s Ollie Osborne and Mac Meissner, Liberty’s Jonathan Yaun and Michigan’s Charlie Pilon.

The Lobos will be back in action on Nov. 4-6 as they close out their fall slate in Monterey, Calif. at the St. Mary’s Invitational hosted by Saint Mary’s.
