Lobos Tie For Sixth at Maridoe Intercollegiate

CARROLLTON, TEXAS — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team tied for sixth at the Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas on Tuesday. The squad was led by sophomore Sam Choi who finished fifth overall to mark his top finish of the season.

Choi registered a three-round total of five over, 221 to finish just six strokes out of first place. The sophomore shot his best score of the tournament in round two with a two under, 70 to go along with his first-round score of 75 (+3) and his third-round score of 76 (+4). Choi led the team in pars as his combined 34 was just three less than the tournament leader (37). Choi also registered eight birdies throughout the competition and his par-5 average of 4.75 (-3) tied for third overall.

Following for the Lobos was redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair who finished tied for 20th at 12 over, 228 with scores of 76 (+4), 72 (+2) and 78 (+6) in each round, respectively. Sinclair led the competition in par-5 scoring in each round as he finished with an average of 4.50 (-6) overall. His 10 birdies, consisting of five in the first round, four in the second round and one in the third round, marked both the most on the team and tied for third overall in the category.

Sophomore Ignacio Arcaya, who registered his best round of the tournament in round one (73, +1), finished the competition tied for 29th with a score of 15 over, 231. Trailing by just two strokes was junior Galven Green who improved his score by nine strokes between rounds one and three, posting an even 72 in the third round following an 81 (+9) in round one and an 80 (+8) in round two. Green improved 17 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 40th.

New Mexico’s individual senior Sam Dickey and freshman Albert Boneta shot scores of 244 (+28) and 246 (+30), respectively to finish 62nd and tied for 64th. Both Lobos shot their best scores of the tournament in round one at six over, 78 and Dickey’s 33 pars tied for fifth in the category.

As a team, the Lobos finished in a tie for sixth with Little Rock at 46 over, 910 after shooting a first-round score of 302 (+14) followed by equal second-and-third-round scores of 304 (+16). The squad preformed its best on par-5s, averaging 5.00 (E) and they accumulated 34 birdies across their three rounds of work.

UNM finished just one stroke behind fifth-place Arkansas State (909, +45), two strokes behind fourth-place host North Texas (908, +44) and four strokes behind the second-place tie between San Francisco and Texas A& M (906, +42). SMU took home the team title for the second year in a row as it sat 24 strokes ahead of second place with a combined total of 882 (+18).

New Mexico finished four strokes ahead of Washington which began its season undefeated and led 12th-place Louisiana by 21 strokes.

The Lobos will be back in action on Oct. 21-22 as they head to Dallas, Texas for the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate hosted by Baylor.
