Men's Golf Heads to PING Cougar Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is set to compete in its final regular-season tournament at the PING Cougar Classic hosted by BYU Friday, April 18 – Saturday, April 19. The tournament will take place at the 7,142-yard, par-72 course at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The event will serve as the Lobos’ final tuneup before the Mountain West Championships starting April 26.

The field for the PING Cougar Classic is made up of 15 teams including five additional Mountain West opponents: Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Utah State and Wyoming. The rest of the field includes host BYU, Denver, in-state rival New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, San Diego, Southern Utah, Saint Mary’s (CA), Utah Valley and Washington.

Of the Mountain West squads competing, Colorado State leads at third in the conference, averaging 2.52 vs. par with an average team score of 289.08. The Lobos sit just one spot behind in fourth place as they are shooting 2.63 vs. par with a team average of 288.41. Wyoming is shooting 3.76 vs. par and occupies the fifth-place spot, while Boise State, Utah State and Air Force hold the ninth, 10th and 11th places, respectively.

Individually, UNM senior Sean Carlon leads for the Lobos in the conference as his average of 0.33 vs. par puts him in a tie for fourth place overall. Redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair follows for New Mexico as he is in 15th with an average of 1.07 vs. par, while freshman Sam Choi follows closely behind in 18th place with a 1.11 average vs. par.

The Lobos enter the tournament following a canceled Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M on April 4-7. The last tournament that UNM completed was the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) hosted by Arizona on March 18-19. Carlon led the Lobos to a sixth-place finish as he clinched eighth-place individually with a score of nine under, 207, good for the Mountain West Player of the Week honor. As a team, New Mexico shot 22 under, 842 and led the competition in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.05 (+3).

Round one of the PING Cougar Classic is set to tee off on Friday at 8:00 a.m. MT and will be directly followed by round two. The final 18 holes are set for Saturday.
