TULSA, Okla. – The University of New Mexico doubles team of Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen dropped to a 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) decision in the round of 16 at the 2016 ITA All-American Men’s Tennis Championships to Edward Covalschi and Josh Hagar of Notre Dame this weekend.
The duo won its opening match on Friday to get that far. They defeated Mate Cutura and Vaughn Hunter of Mississippi State in the first round of the tournament 6-4, 6-2. That win led them to the second round of 16 in the tournament where they met up with Covalschi and Hagar later that day.
Sabatka and Van Leijsen also qualified for the first round of men’s singles as well. Sabatka was seeded was knocked out in the opening round by Alex Keyser of Columbia University 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday. Van Leijsen was defeated 7-6 7-(5), 6-2 by the No. 16 seed Igor Smelyanski of Clemson.
The men’s tennis team heads to their next tournament at the ITA Mountain Reginal in Las Vegas, Nev., which runs Oct. 19-23 and is hosted by UNLV.
