Albuquerque, N.M.—The University of New Mexico men’s tennis squad heads into the final day of the tournament with momentum. Baklini defeated Tadgh Collins of the Air Force Academy today 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinal match in the turquoise draw. This win places him in the final match against Stijn Dehaan of New Mexico State.
Augustus Ge is also headed to the final match in his draw. He defeated Will Kneale of the University of Arizona 6-4, 6-1 and goes on to play Christopher Goncalves of New Mexico State University tomorrow.
Tran also defeated his opponent, Paul Domanski of Abeline Christian University, 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-final consolation match in the Silver draw. He goes on to play Zach Fryer of Denver University tomorrow in the finals.
Also playing in the consolation final of his draw is Rodolfo Jauregui. He will play New Mexico State University’s Strahinja Trecakov.
In doubles play, Michael Tran and Sean Baklini came up short against Adkisson and James of The University of Arizona, losing 8-3.
The duo of Augustus Ge and Rodolfo Jauregui, however, advanced to the final match of the Gold draw after defeating Proctor and Domanski of Abilene Christian University 8-4. They will play the pair from the University of Arizona.
“Today we showed some good improvements. The theme of today was to enjoy competition, enjoy playing good opponents and enjoy the challenge of the big moments of each match,” said assistant coach Ben Dunbar. “The Albuquerque weather gave us a great day and there really is no better place to play than McKinnon on a day like this. We have some finals tomorrow and we look forward to playing in more pressure situations.”
