University of New Mexico senior golfer Victor Perez tied for 22nd with a 9-over 225 over the weekend at the 11th annual Jones Cup Invitational in Sea Island, Ga.
Perez finished nine strokes behind the winner, Austin Connelly, the No. 3-ranked junior amateur in the country who will attend the University of Arkansas next year.
Perez, a native of Semeac, France, improved by a stroke in each round, shooting 76-75-74 on the par-72, 7,321-yard Ocean Forest Golf Club. Among those who shared 22nd place in the 82-player field were Alabama’s Robby Shelton, the No. 9 collegiate amateur in the country, according to Golfweek.com/Sagarin, and TCU’s Julien Brun.
Perez’s teammate, Lobo senior Gavin Green, has returned to his home country of Malaysia for the Malaysia Maybank Open, a European Tour Professional event, from Thursday-Sunday in Kuala Lumpur. He is currently the No. 7 collegiate player by Golfweek.com/Sagarin and is No. 15 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Green has competed in the event twice, finishing tied for 22nd in 2013 and 47th last year. His caddy for the event this year again will be UNM coach Glen Millican.
The Lobos, ranked 26th in the latest Golfweek.com/Sagarin poll, will return to action Feb. 19-21 at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Kauai, Hawaii.
